How to make a passport size photo at home
Skip the studio: take the photo with your phone, crop it to the official size, and print a sheet of copies for a few rupees.
1. Take a good photo
- Stand in front of a plain white or light-coloured wall, about an arm's length away.
- Face the camera straight, neutral expression, eyes open, no sunglasses or caps.
- Use daylight from a window in front of you - avoid harsh shadows on your face or the wall.
- Ask someone else to take it from about 1-1.5 m away at eye level, rather than a close-up selfie.
2. Crop it to the official size
- Open Passport photo maker and add your photo.
- Choose the size: India passport/visa 35 × 45 mm, USA 2 × 2 inch, Schengen, UK, Canada and more.
- Drag the box so your face is centred with a little space above your head. Your head and shoulders should fill most of the frame.
3. Print copies
Pick 4 × 6 in (8 photos - the standard photo-shop paper) or A4 (up to 32 photos). Download the sheet as JPG or PDF.
- Print at 100% / actual size - never "fit to page", or the photos will come out the wrong size.
- Any photo shop can print a 4 × 6 sheet in minutes, usually for ₹10-20.
- Cut along the light guide lines.
Always check the official rules
Requirements differ by country and change over time (background colour, head size, glasses). Check the passport or visa website before printing.
